After being in production for almost 6 months and on time for a Black Hat, Vegas release, BackTrack has been updated. It is called the BackTrack 4 R1 “BlackHat Edition”. This was released a few days ago at the BH Vegas.

“BackTrack is a Linux-based penetration testing arsenal that aids security professionals in the ability to perform assessments in a purely native environment dedicated to hacking. Regardless if you’re making BackTrack your primary operating system, booting from a LiveDVD, or using your favorite thumbdrive, BackTrack has been customized down to every package, kernel configuration, script and patch solely for the purpose of the penetration tester.“

- Massively improved hardware support
- Support for new wireless drivers

After a successful pre-release and a beta, BackTrack 4 has a FINAL release! The current kernel in use is 2.6.30.9.

As you might have already seen, this release includes a new kernel, a larger and expanded toolset repository, custom tools that you can only find on BackTrack, and fixes to major bugs! We will keep you updated with more as soon as we know more! For now, we are downloading it!

Any one in the penetration testing field is well aware of BackTrack livecd. It is in it’s version 4 already and trust me, I am crazy about this little beast! You will be too if you start using this one!

BackTrack 4
So, the guys at Remote Exploit have just whipped up a newer beta of BackTrack with many imporvements over the past versions. A direct lift off from the website will be more informative. Some of the new features include:
* Kernel 2.6.28.1 with better hardware support.
* Native support for Pico e12 and e16 cards is now fully functional, making BackTrack the first pentesting distro to fully utilize these awesome tiny machines.
* Support for PXE Boot – Boot BackTrack over the network with PXE supported cards!
* SAINT EXPLOIT – kindly provided by SAINT corporation for our users with a limited number of free IPs.
* MALTEGO – The guys over at Paterva did outstanding work with Maltego 2.0.2 – which is featured in BackTrack as a community edition.
* The latest mac80211 wireless injection pacthes are applied, with several custom patches for rtl8187 injection speed enhancements. Wireless injection support has never been so broad and functional.
* Unicornscan – Fully functional with postgress logging support and a web front end.
* RFID support
* Pyrit CUDA support…
* New and updated tools – the list is endless!
Since the version 3, they have upgraded the kernel too! The BT 3 had kernerl version 2.6.21.5. The newer BT 4 has 2.6.28.1 with better hardware support! It is also based on Debian core packages and utilizing the Ubuntu software repositories, BackTrack 4 can be upgraded in case of update. When syncing with the BackTrack repositories, you will regularly get security tool updates soon after they are released!
