If you use BackTrack, you must be aware of an utility called the Netdisco. Netdisco is an Open Source web-based network management tool. It allows you to map MAC addresses to IP addresses, so that you can locate the exact switch port of any node connected to the network.

Netdisco utilizes SNMP to fetch ARP tables from routers and MAC tables from layer 2 switches. It has excellent support for Cisco Discovery Protocol (CDP). Infact, this was one of the protocols for which it was was developed. That is the reason why, if CDP, Link Layer Discovery Protocol, Foundry Discovery Protocol or SynOptics Network Management Protocol is available, discovery of the network topology is mostly automatic! Your routers and switches can be polled to log IP and MAC addresses and then they can be mapped to their switch ports.

These are a few of the features of Netdisco:

  • Open source
  • MAC Address to switch port resolution
  • IP Address to switch port resolution
  • Find Switch Ports with multiple nodes attached
  • Find nodes using multiple IP addresses
  • Find nodes by vendor (using MAC address OUI)
  • View and Change VLAN assigned to port
  • SSID And Channel Information on wireless ports
  • Database store for scalability and speed (Postgresql)
  • Easily extendible to new network device types and vendors
  • Built-in user system to restrict access to sensitive data and features
  • Get statistics of the number of actual nodes connected to network and their address-space usage
  • Optional integration with a Pinnacle Database
  • Inventory of Network Devices:
    * by Operating System (IOS,CatOS,HP,etc.)
  • * by Model, Vendor, OSI Layer, DNS Name, etc.

  • Find devices using IP Addresses without DNS entries
  • Free!

If nothing, you can pretty well paint a very good graphic of your network if The current version of Netdisco is version 1.0 which can be downloaded here.
