John the Ripper: The Password Cracker!

There are password crackers and then there are more password crackers and unfortunately, John the Ripper does not come into any of these classes! JTR as it is affectionately called, is THE password cracker you will need on 15 (fifteen!) platforms! No wonder it has been ranked second to all existing password crackers on Sectools!

John the Ripper is a fast password cracker. It is currently available for many flavors of Unix (11+), DOS, Win32, BeOS, and OpenVMS. A cherry to the pie being that it is completely free and open source! It combines a number of password crackers into one package with features such as auto-detection password hash types! It also includes a customizable cracker. It can be run against various encrypted password formats including DES, MD5, Blowfish, Kerberos AFS, and LM hash. An ability to patch JTR further adds support for MD4 and our favourite MPI (Message Passing Interface) standard that allows you to use multiple processors on a single system, or a cluster of systems for cracking passwords using JTR!

Currently, JTR supports the following attack types:
1. Dictionary Mode: Compares passwords to a wordlist.
2. Brute force Mode: Compares passwords to all possible plaintexts.

Enough of us ranting about this beauty as enough has been said about it. Download the latest release – John the Ripper version 1.7.4.2 here.
