What NetworkMiner is for the Windows network, Kismet is for the Wireless Network. As you know, NetworkMiner is a passive sniffer that works on Windows 2000 & above. Kismet is a passive sniffer that can associate both wireless access points and wireless clients with each other.

Kismet is an 802.11 layer2 wireless network detector, sniffer, and intrusion detection system. After being in development for a long time now, a newer version is out! The latest version is Kismet-2009-05-RC2

Kismet Features:

  • 802.11b, 802.11g, 802.11a, 802.11n sniffing
  • Standard PCAP file logging (Wireshark, Tcpdump, etc)
  • Client/Server modular architecture
  • Multi-card and channel hopping support
  • Runtime WEP decoding
  • Tun/Tap virtual network interface drivers for realtime export of packets
  • Hidden SSID decloaking
  • Distributed remote sniffing with Kismet drones
  • XML logging for integration with other tools
  • Linux, OSX, Windows, and BSD support (devices and drivers permitting)

Kismet also includes basic wireless IDS features such as detecting active wireless sniffing programs including NetStumbler, as well as a number of wireless network attacks. It can log all sniffed packets and save them in a tcpdump/Wireshark orAirsnort compatible fileformat. It can also log the geographical coordinates of the network if an input from a GPS device is available! You can also make use of the Server/drone/client infrastructure that Kismet offers. A drone can be used to collect packets, and then pass them on to a server for interpretation. A server can either be used in conjunction with a drone, or on its own, interpreting packet data, and extrapolating wireless information, and organizing it. The client communicates with the server and displays the information the server collects. This way, you can have a drone at a sparate location and work accordingly.
